The art of the Arctic peoples is often called unique. Indeed, the people who have been living in the extremely hard natural and climatic conditions for centuries, created an exclusive arctic culture. One of its remarcable manifestations is the carving and engraving on bone of polar animals, first of all, on walrus tusks. The carving art, which had once prevailed all over the North, exists today only in some areas, mainly in Alaska, Yakutia and the Chukchi Autonomous Region. Here, in Chukotka, it is fully preserved. Stylistic traditions which have long been lost by artists of other Arctic regions are still developing. The most significant center of carving art on the Chukchi peninsula is Uelen, a settlement of sea hunters and reindeer-herders. It is situated near Cape Dezhnev, where water of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans meet.
