Orenburg downy shawl is the unique knitting. The women of south and east districts of Orenburg region were occupied with it from 18 century. Climate conditions provided breeding of the exlusive kind of goats here with light, warm, silk, longfibrous kind of downy, that there is not of one race. Production of shawls devided at two stages: the first - very labour-intensive treatment of downy, the second - knitting to demand the big professional mastery.
Creative work of knitters is combining knowing of traditional patterns and free improvisation. The shawls and tippets represented here were knitting by hands. Thin open-work "cobwebs" give rise to special enthusiasm by their lightness and beauty of patterns. It is known that "cobweb" of size 200x200cm without difficulties lies through a wedding-ring so far it is thin and flexible. For production one of this shawl is needed one month as a rule.
